Tuesday Talk...For the Love of Dirt
Over the years I have worked in many different daycare and children's centers. I have seen and been around a ton of little toddlers. For the most part these kids fall into two categories...the ones that can't stand dirt of any kind on them or their hands, and the ones that like dirt.
I guess I never really had an opinion on which I preferred my child to be until I realized one day she was so far in one of those categories there was no question:
This child of ours LOVES dirt!
Like more then most kids. Like to the point my husband and I sometimes talk about if it is weird how much she loves it...like should we be worried?!?
I am not a neat freak by any stretch of the imagination and feel like when I was kid I didn't mind dirt...but Miss Ellie LOVES dirt. Like, if we go somewhere she will find any small trace of mud and scrape her little finger nails in it before I can even utter a word out to stop her. Part of me hates this...I am constantly cleaning her up and changing her clothes...do you know how hard it is to get dirt out from underneath tiny two year old finger nails??? There is a bigger part of me, however, that actually kind of loves it. I love to see my daughter digging and playing in nature. It is super refreshing to know that she could entertain herself with a pile of rocks, mud and mulch waaaaay longer then she could with an i-pad. (for the record, it would be close because she does love herself some i-pad time too)
Let me just give you all a little glimpse into the life of Ellie and her love affair with dirt...
So yeah...our kid loves dirt, maybe more then most things, and although it can be messy and sometimes take longer to clean her up or get her to leave a good mud/mulch/rock pile...I still love every minute of it!
